Yellow Fever Vaccination
It is advisable to get a yellow fever vaccination before leaving Australia.
Mosquitoes & Malaria
You will get bitten by mosquitoes. The ideal is to minimize the amount
of exposure. Mosquito nets for beds and hammocks are recommended, and
should be available locally when not provided. Mosquitoes are generally
more prevalent around dawn and dusk, early and late, often referred to as "the
mosquito hour". Especially at this time you should have as much of your
skin covered as possible, for instance with long sleeve shirt and long pants,
and not forget shoes and hat. Strong mosquito repellent is also useful;
however, it is not recommended to apply
DEET (diethyltoluamide) directly to the
skin, and care should be taken when applying it to certain types of fine or
synthetic clothing. Perhaps better is a strong natural repellent, such as
citronella oil; however, it should be remembered not to wear pungent odors of
any kind during Daime works and feitios.
There is malaria in the Amazon. Prophylactic antimalarial medications
are commonly strong chemicals with pronounced side effects. Generally speaking,
strong chemicals do not seem to mix well with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). After all, the purpose of monoamine oxidases is apparently to protect the body
from strong chemicals.
